The Play Wall, Elephant and Castle, London
BALI Principal Award Winner for REGENERATION SCHEME OVER £500K – SPONSORED BY MCM (SE).
Project Overview
PlayEquip was engaged by a landscape architect to design and develop a temporary playground at the edge of a major redevelopment site in Elephant and Castle, London. Our previous collaboration had demonstrated how our expertise in play design can streamline the process and ensure that the playground is not only safe but also offers high play value and adheres to European standards.
Design Brief
Our task was to create an engaging temporary play structure integrated into the construction site hoarding. The design concept aimed to maximise the use of the boundary space while focusing on aesthetics and play value for the local community. Despite its temporary nature, the structure was designed for future disassembly and donation to a local adventure playground. High-value components, such as the steel tube slide, were engineered for reuse, and timber uprights were fitted with bolt-down shoes for easy dismantling without compromising the expensive timber.
Safety Considerations
A conceptual model was already in place when we were commissioned, so we adapted the design at stage 3 and produced stage 4 shop drawings for approval by a structural engineer and an independent play safety inspector. Collaboration with an independent play safety inspector throughout the design and build process is crucial to our work, ensuring that our ambitious designs remain safe. This includes desktop assessments of 3D models, pre-completion inspections during the snagging stage, and post-completion inspections for client sign-off.
Fabrication
The carpentry for wooden components was completed off-site in our workshop and delivered to the site once the groundwork was finished by the main contractor. We used standardised playground components such as off-the-shelf swing hangers, chains, and swing seats. All timber used in the design was FSC certified, ensuring sustainability and quality.
Installation
Our specialist installation team, consisting of experienced ground workers, carpenters, and project leads, constructed the project on-site. Their extensive knowledge of play safety regulations provided our clients with the confidence that all installations were safe. As part of a large Lendlease development project, the Construction (Design and Management) (CDM) regulations were strictly adhered to. We worked closely with the main contractor to reduce costs and increase efficiencies.
