Crystal Palace Park Dinosaur Playground
A Landmark Dinosaur Themed Play Space in South London
Set within the historic landscape of Crystal Palace Park, this landmark destination playground forms part of the wider regeneration of one of Londonās most iconic public parks. Working alongside HTA Design, Bromley Council, Crystal Palace Park Trust and Maylim, PlayEquip delivered a series of large scale bespoke play structures inspired by the parkās world famous Victorian dinosaur sculptures and geological heritage. (HTA Design)
The design draws directly from Sir Joseph Paxtonās original vision for Crystal Palace Park as a ājourney through timeā, creating an immersive play environment that encourages exploration, discovery and imaginative play. Located close to the Grade I listed dinosaur sculptures, the playground transforms the landscape into a prehistoric adventure where children can climb through dinosaur skeletons, scramble across fossil inspired forms and navigate a series of elevated play experiences woven into the natural topography of the park.
Bespoke Dinosaur Inspired Play Structures
At the heart of the scheme are two large bespoke timber and steel play structures designed and manufactured by PlayEquip. Each structure was individually developed to respond to the surrounding landscape, age range and overall narrative of the playground.
Inspired by prehistoric skeletal forms and geological formations, the structures combine climbing nets, elevated walkways, balancing elements, slides, swings and tactile play features into sculptural pieces that emerge naturally from the landscape. Embankment slides carved into the mounding and spine inspired climbing frames create a highly physical and visually striking play experience that feels fully integrated into the site.
Natural timber, robust steel detailing and custom rope play elements were carefully combined to create equipment capable of withstanding intensive public use while maintaining a warm and tactile appearance appropriate to the historic park setting.
Designed Through Community Collaboration
The playground was shaped through an extensive co-design process involving local children, families and community groups. Workshops and engagement sessions helped inform many of the final play features, with childrenās favourite dinosaurs, including Megalosaurus, Hylaeosaurus and Iguanodon, directly influencing the final forms and play experiences. This collaborative process helped create a play environment that feels unique to Crystal Palace Park while encouraging imaginative, open ended and inclusive play.
Inclusive and Accessible Play
Accessibility and inclusivity were central to the project from the outset. Alongside the large bespoke structures, the playground incorporates accessible play experiences including wheelchair accessible roundabouts, accessible swings, basket swings, sensory play elements and accessible routes throughout the site. Working with specialist consultants and local groups, the carefully considered layout allows children of different ages and abilities to play together within a shared landscape, creating a welcoming destination for families across the community.
Large Scale Public Realm Play Delivery
Crystal Palace Park demonstrates PlayEquipās ability to deliver large scale bespoke playgrounds within complex public realm and heritage environments. From early stage design collaboration through to manufacture and installation, the project required close coordination with landscape architects, engineers, specialist contractors and heritage stakeholders to ensure the final result balanced creativity, durability, accessibility and technical compliance.
The completed playground now forms a major destination within the wider park regeneration and provides an engaging, educational and highly distinctive play experience for future generations of visitors.
